Quite the coincidence and he's lucky to be alive, but I also fail to see how he's a hero.

I think it has to do with:

I think it has to do with the fact that Americans are very keen on putting a 'hero' stamp on each and everyone who remotely did anything over the average.

Hell, if I go shopping at my local grocery, HEB, I 'go home a hero' for buying some toiletpaper...

I don't think that you can say that a grocery store's slogan is representative of a culture.

Anyway, hero is defined:
