Los Angeles Cargo Facility Opens

A new USD$35 million cargo facility for United Airlines is to be officially opened at Los Angeles International Airport on Thursday.

The state-of-the art facility, which will be the airline's main West Coast gateway for cargo, becomes operational on February 11.

The new cargo area includes a USD$5.8 million customized automation system and the latest in high security equipment.

"Despite these troubled times, this new facility, reaffirms our commitment to this airport, to the Los Angeles community, and the shipping public," said Roger A. Gibson, vice president, United Cargo.

"Our goal is to provide fast, reliable, world-class service to our customers, who in 2001, shipped over 360 million pounds of cargo, in terms of total volumes, through our LAX warehouse facility. Not only do volumes of this magnitude make this new facility essential, but with more than 190,000 square feet and the latest in handling equipment, storage, and security, our service will be more efficient and reliable than ever before
