Investigators were combing through wreckage early Saturday after two single-engine planes crashed over a densely populated neighborhood, killing both pilots but injuring no one on the ground.
State police helicopters were searching for additional victims, although it was not clear how many people were aboard the four-seat planes, said Robert Grepz of the National Transportation Safety Board.
The planes a Piper Lance doing practice landings and a Cessna trying to land crashed Friday evening near the Essex County Airport, authorities said.
Jason Ribik, a flight instructor at Air Fleet Training System, said he was taking off with a student at the airport when he saw the planes collide and plummet to the Earth.
