No, flightview doesn't look like what we're talking about. The FlyteTrax actually displays a nice map of the US or world with overlayed weather radar and displays graphics indicating every flight that's in the air at the moment.

You can click on the little dot representing a specific flight and get all sorts of interesting information on the flight -- altitude, flight time, departure, destination, equipment, etc.

It's pretty slick, really. Looks kinda like this:

Played around with FlyteTrax for a while. It turns out that there's a service from the FAA called ASDI, for Aircraft Situation Display to Industry, which gives minute-accurate GPS coordinates in real-time. Anyone can get a feed, if you sign the agreement; you just need to run a line to Volpe in Cambridge. Alternately, you can buy from a reseller, who'll happily set up a TCP feed for the data to you.
