Interesting article and experience -- it sounds about right. Not really surprising; I didn't realize that people still brought travelers cheques to Western Europe.
The only comment I have is that it's not true that the cheques are invalid if you countersign them before presenting them to a bank. You can present them signed and the bank or merchant can call American Express for verification.
