I really don't know why

I've booked a room at the Sacramento Hilton (south, near the airport) for my ~7 hours of downtime in between flights on my 15/16-Dec mileage run. Of course, I booked the room using my HHonors Gold account. What I'm not entirely clear about, though, is why I should bother doing this.

The points, if and when they make it to my OnePass account are negligible at best. And I've never had my loyalty program membership gain me even a smile or special hello during checkin. I sure as hell haven't seen a room upgrade or any other special treatment.

This is hardly a Hilton-specific issue, although I try to favor Hilton so my experiences with other loyalty programs is more limited.

Is there really any value to hotel loyalty programs? Am I missing something, or does it really only matter for those who have earned diamond or top-tier membership?

There's no extra effort, so it's not costing me any energy or thought, but I've yet to see why I should be motivated to continue.
