CHICAGO (Reuters) - AMR Corp.'s (NYSE:AMR - news) American Airlines, the No. 1 U.S. carrier, on Tuesday said it would accelerate construction of its new terminal at New York's JFK International Airport despite earlier announced layoffs and schedule cutbacks.

The move, aimed at cutting overall construction costs, comes despite drastic cuts in overall capital spending, the airline said. Like most other major U.S. airlines in the wake of the Sept. 11 attacks, American plans to lay off 20,000 workers and is cutting back capacity by 20 percent as it copes with a sharp drop in travel demand.
