Companion Upgrade with different origins

I'm flying tomorrow with a biz partner that I'm meeting in IAH. I'm leaving from AUS and he's leaving from IAH. Is there any trick to getting him on the waiting list (or the immediate upgrade) before I arrive at IAH?

I'm sort of expecting to ask and be told to ask at IAH.

I've heard that if you know the AUS P-club staff you can get him on the list before you leave AUS

As tycoonjack has implied, I had no trouble doing so at the AUS Presidents Club. I showed up well before my flight to allow time to beat silvers and such from grabbing available seats "up front"

My companion and I had a comfortable flight and great dinner in 1A and 1B.
