(CHICAGO) October 5, 2001 -- United Airlines confirmed today that it has submitted engineering designs to the Federal Aviation Administration for new cockpit security bars in compliance with the FAA's new guidelines. United will have security bars in place on its entire operating fleet by October 21, or sooner. United was one of the first airlines to announce that it would reinforce cockpit doors following the September 11 attacks on the United States.

CHICAGO, Oct. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- United Airlines (NYSE: UAL - news) confirmed today that twenty-five percent of its active fleet of aircraft is now equipped with the new cockpit security bars in compliance with the Federal Aviation Administration's new guidelines.

In all, United has reinforced cockpit doors on 150 of its active fleet of aircraft, including half of its widebody fleet. United's employees are working literally around-the-clock to install the security bars on the airline's entire operating fleet by October 21, or sooner. United was one of the first airlines to announce that it would reinforce cockpit doors following the September 11 attacks on the United States.
