CHICAGO (AP) -- United Airlines mechanics voted Tuesday on a disputed contract offer that would grant them industry-leading pay but require them to give back some of those wages soon to aid the struggling carrier's recovery effort.


Depending on the verdict on two ballot issues -- contract approval and whether to authorize a strike if it fails -- a walkout could begin as soon as Feb. 20 unless there is a last-minute settlement or congressional action to block it.

ELK GROVE VILLAGE, Ill. (Reuters) - United Airlines on Friday said passengers began looking elsewhere for flights in anticipation of a strike set for next week after 13,000 mechanics and cleaners rejected a contract offer.

With a strike deadline looming in five days at the No. 2 U.S. carrier, talks resumed Friday afternoon. Earlier this week, mechanics rejected an offer from United that included a 37 percent pay increase for the most senior workers, but also sought unspecified future wage concessions and deferred retroactive pay, among other provisions.

It's surprising to see that a company facing bankruptcy thinks that it could potentially survive a disabling strike like this.

I booked back in late Nov. and just made final payment for 4 on Feb 4th. I wouldn't think the strike would go until March 22, but I'm worried that it would cause stability problems with UA and throw schedules off.
