I have never quite understood why every hotel loyalty program I'm enrolled in ranks their membership tiers based on distinct stays with their hotel and not cumulative nights stayed. I'm gearing up for an extended stay at Swissôtel next month and it seems unfair that although I'll incur weeks and weeks of patronage it will still only count as "1" stay towards my qualification for their loyalty program.
I'm sure there's a reason for this, but it escapes me. Can anyone offer some insight? |

I suspect that it is to encourage people to make the decision to stay at a particular hotel time and time again.
A potential client is to stay at a hotel for as long as he is in town. Even though a multi-week visit generates substantially more revenue than a one-night stay, the chance for competition only exists once. |

Similar to the way that airlines require segments (as opposed to miles).
