We hijacked the MSN Messenger field in order to provide a place where users may enter their IRC Nick (for the online chat). I intend to handle this issue more elegantly and in a way that retains the MSN Messenger field once we upgrade to phpBB version 2. (should be soon, but they've not committed to a release date)
