Travel to Australia and Asia

Does anyone have any recommendations on how to save money on flying from the West Coast to Sydney, then to Taiwan and back? That's like 3 one-way tickets, and it looks like it's going to be expensive!

From what "West Coast" to Sydney? Then to Taiwan and back? Back to Taiwan or back to Sydney or back to the "West Coast?"

Starting from what airport (city and country,) going to what city and from there where, etc.?

Check with China Airlines, www.china-airlines.com and see what they can do for you. I have used China Air to Asia pretty often in the past.

First the SFO to Sydney part probably won't be done in one shot. SFO to Taipei and Taipei to Sydney, Sydney back to Taipei and from there to SFO.

Perhaps CI will allow you to do this as one round trip SFO to Sydney, going through their hub at TPE. Would you be visiting TPE or only in transit passing through? Getting off in Taipei will cost a little more. CI may have some specials going on, don't forget to check.

The TPE to Sydney route may be done by by their partner airline.

I have flown through Taipei lots of times - but never to Sydney. You are lucky to have so many Asian airlines flying out of SFO to choose from.

For the best price you have to be flexible and check the prices one or two days before and one or two days after you preferred departure day. Avoid weekends, Fridays and holiday departures, usually they cost more. Some Asian carriers may not fly every day, sometimes they may go M, W & F only.

CI (China Airlines) has an 800 number for California, you will have to look it up. After checking their web page I would give them a call and speak to their reservations desk. (I like the schedule CI has that gets me to Asia in the day time. I used to use them a lot for Bangkok and Manila.)

Good luck.

Always check the "hot deal" prices against the airline's website to verify that you really have a "good deal!" If you don't know what the airlines are charging, how do you know you really have a good deal? Trust but verify!

Some airlines guarantee to have the "lowest" prices for the same flights, I would rather get my ticket directly from the airline, at the same lowest price. However, if you only fly occasionally then the cheapest price may be good enough!

.

I am a "collector" of frequent flyer miles. I sometimes will not use the cheapest carrier if that means I cannot collect my miles, especially for long trips to places overseas, like Asia or Australia. With NWA, using my gold or platinum card, I get either 100% or 125% bonus miles when I fly. (Every flight is double credit miles or more!) So, saving $50 or even $90 is not worth it if I also lose 20,000 in bonus miles!

I fly out of Boston, often to Asia and I like my bonus miles! And I like the perks that I get with my elite cards - so the cheapest flight is not always the "best deal" for everyone!

Smile thanks!

Thanks for the tips, Frosty. I hate losing those frequent flyer miles too. So I'll look to fly through TPE with a stopover. Just wanted to avoid more time in transit, but if it ends up being cheaper than the direct to SYD, I guess it's worth it!

You probable should go to a travel agency. Travel agencies get special prices which might make up for the additional fees.
