Advice Needed On Connections

This is an incredably silly question I'm sure....

I'm not a regular flyer, and have never had to take a connecting flight before. I'm traveling to Las Vegas in October, and will have to catch a connecting flight at LAX (LHR>LAX then LAX>LAS).

How do connecting flights work? What is the actual procedure? Do you go through immigration and collect bags etc. then go back into the airport as a new passinger, or is there a more sensible method?

If someone could give me a step by step guide as to what to expect / how the prrocess works / any pitflls, I'd be greatful.

Thanks for reading my silly question.

Re: Advice Needed On Connections

Hiya,
No question is ever silly! Connections vary from airport to airport and from country to country but in general this is how it works - passenger gets off flight, passenger is shown or finds airside connection transfer corridor, passenger appears in departure lounge and boards next flight. Note that passenger has not come landside nor collected baggage.
Now for the USA, where it works a little different. Passenger gets off aircraft, collects bags, goes through customs to enter the country, makes was to departures, goes through security once again, and heads to departure lounge and onto aircraft once more.
I think thats about it, but if anyone else wants to add something or tell me I am wrong, I am happy to hear it - certainly when I was last in the US, that was how I did it....
Enjoy your trip - Vegas is fun.
