just use the internet cafes.

usually they're pretty easy to find, and have fairly cheap access. Some are hourly, and some you can even put coins in to use.

Wifi

If worse comes to worst, you can walk (or drive) about looking to pick up un-secured links.

There are a great many people, including myself, who intentionally leave their wifi systems open for the use of others. We have a beach cottage, and we do occasionally get people using their laptops nearby, and at least one neighbor who uses my connection regularly.

This works two ways, I once had a major problem with my internet connection, and was able to use another neighbor's open wifi during the interim without suffering any downtime.

That is very nice of you! I have been traveling for the last year and have a Buffalo high power laptop card.

I have been pretty successful in picking up an open wifi signal all the time. Some of the most amazing place that I found a free signal on were on Phi Phi island in Thailand in a bungalow on a beach that you had to take a long boat to. There was someone nearby with a satellite connection hooked to an 802.1 wifi and I was able to watch the Dallas Mavericks in the basketball finals.

In Cairns, Australia I found a nice wifi spot in the middle of the town square. I got to know the people at the local cafe since I was always there picking up a nearby access point.

I wish there was an easier way to see the networks like those little handheld devices that would also check to see if it has access to outside or is just an open wifi spot to a commercial provider...

Nowadays, there are many public places have wifi area.
Here in Barcelona, they say they build wifi area all over the beach.
I hope they made it already... ( I'm not sure, but...)

Check with your hotel or B&B. They are getting good about having hot spots everywhere. There are also a ton of internet cafes.
