| Semana Grande, San Sebastian Spain San Sebastián Spain celebrates its annual Big Week (Semana Grande in Spanish, Aste Nagusia in Basque) with a packed programme of entertainment. Traditional folk songs, parades and costumes fill the streets and spectacular fireworks light up Concha Bay each night. The festival opens with a gunshot and a plethora of cultural events follow throughout the week. Sport also features heavily, with a regatta, a swim across the bay, surfing and horse-racing all on the programme. Bullfighting is also popular at this time, but if you can't stomach this, stick to the other activities that the festival has to offer.

This festival began in 1876 with the goal of entertaining the Spanish Royal Court who would spend their summers in San Sebastian. A favorite amongst locals and visitors alike, Semana Grande is a week long festival that includes concerts, parades, bullfights, a carnival with rides and an internationally recognized fireworks competition. Starting the second week in August, the area of Paseo Nuevo turns into a fair ground with games, rides, food and more. Throughout the city there will be live music performances and the Old Quarter will be buzzing all night long as the bars embrace the festive atmosphere. The San Sebastian International Fireworks Competetion runs in conjunction with this festival so each night there will be a fireworks display by some of the world's top pyrotechnic teams. |
