US Airways Group Inc. said yesterday that it lost $766 million in the third quarter, the biggest quarterly loss in its 61-year history.

The results include the $331 million the Arlington-based airline received from the federal government to compensate for losses resulting from the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

The loss amounted to $11.42 a share. In the third quarter of last year, US Airways lost $30 million, or 45 cents a share.

I am afraid if things are not improving rapidly in this industry, we are going to see alot of Chpt 11s and consolidations.

i've seen financial writters predicting that europe will end up with 3 carriers and the the US with 3-4 majors
