yay... have my own custom avatar now... but anyways, I tried to upload it directly to the site, but it didn't work.. gave me some sort of error... so I just linked it from another site... is this a know problem with the upload?

The custom avatar support we're using is a bit of a hack, it's not a native feature of the version of phpBB we're using. When we upgrade to the next version of phpBB (should be in the next few weeks) the feature will be part of the base system and will be a bit easier to manage.
