Staying logged in without an auto-logout or losing a cookie

A few members (including me) have been discussing in #ityt that after Friday night, it has become difficult to stay logged into the board in the same ways that were possible before.

I've done a bit of fiddling and believe that I have the problem solved. Please let me know if you experience any further troubles.
