Tail Fin, Data Recorder Key to U.S. Crash Probe

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Investigators took a close look on Wednesday at the tail fin and rudder from an American Airlines jetliner that crashed and killed up to 265 people, and sought clues from a badly damaged flight data recorder.

The probe into the crash of Flight 587 was moving swiftly, but National Transportation Safety Board (news - web sites) investigators said they were unable to decipher critical information from the data recorder at their lab in Washington on Tuesday night.

The device, one of two so-called ``black boxes'' on the Airbus A300 recovered since Monday's crash near John F. Kennedy International Airport, will be analyzed by its manufacturer in Sarasota, Fla., L-3 Communications.

Investigators still expected it to play a vital role in the investigation. ``The flight data recorder will speak to a number of questions that we have,'' said safety board chairwoman Marion Blakey

Officials: G.E. engine deemed 'unsafe.'

WASHINGTON (AP) - Federal safety officials concluded a month ago there was an unsafe condition in the type of engine that powered an airliner that crashed in New York City, and started moving toward tougher inspections.

Investigators were treating Monday's crash of American Airlines Flight 587 as an accident. The chief reason, said George Black, an investigator with the National Transportation Safety Board, is the plane's cockpit voice recorder.

``It is absent of any extraneous noises or acts that we would not associate with a normal aviation environment,'' Black said on CBS' ``The Early Show.''

American Airlines Flight 587 plunged into a quiet Queens neighborhood on Monday morning, killing all 260 people aboard the Airbus A300 in a fiery air disaster that shook New Yorkers with fears of a deadly new attack almost exactly two months after Sept. 11.

Hours later, not only did ``587'' turn out to be the winning number in the New Jersey Lottery's Pick-3 game, but players wound up buying a whopping 27,829 winning tickets. They each won $16, and the money won by other types of tickets that also contained the flight number pushed the total payout over $1 million.
