Two small planes swooped through restricted airspace around New York City and buzzed a cruise ship, officials said, raising fears of a July Fourth terrorist attack before police helicopters forced them down.
The Florida pilots were released early Friday and were back in the skies by late morning, tugging advertising banners past beachgoers as federal authorities in New York considered whether to file criminal charges against them.
Andre Morais and Daniel Oliveira, both of Miami, may also face FAA sanctions for flight violations.
The planes, owned by Aerial Sign Corp. in Hollywood, Fla., flew as low as 50 feet off Queens' Rockaway shoreline, well below the required 1,000-foot minimum, FAA spokesman Jim Peters said.
