Airport runway near-collisions fall after years of increases

WASHINGTON -- Near-collisions on the nation's airport runways fell last year, the first substantial decline since 1993.

The announcement Wednesday by the Federal Aviation Administration marks one of the first bright spots in the agency's two-year effort to solve a vexing aviation safety problem. But officials cautioned that the number of runway incidents is still too high and that much remains to be done
