Concorde's last flight.

Something better for me than watching them land, watching one (probably G-BOAF from JFK) overfly my house for the last time.

Same topic -- I posted this on my livejournal the other day:

Quote:

The last flight of the Aerospatiale Concorde is on Friday, being operated as British Airways flight BA001 ("speedbird one heavy") for the last time. As a plane geek, I'm (surprisingly) quite sad about the last commercial flight of the Concorde. I've been attracted to the plane for as long as I can remember and even named my (defunct) consulting company after the aircraft in 1992.

I'll never forget being concerned about the fate of the aircraft when airframe cracks found in the active Concorde fleet in early 2000 and remember like it's yesterday the moment on July 25, 2000 when I read on Yahoo! News that AF4950 crashed (for an unrelated reason) on departure climb from CDG.

The aircraft is a matter of national pride for both France and UK, which explains a lot of the press that the aircraft has gotten. And even though the cockpit is antiquated and the crew workload is beyond exceptionally intensive, the aircraft is the biggest innovation in transportation since the jet engine. It's sad that it was never practical and doomed before the first commercial Concorde flight ever took place.
