| | Airline Workers Charged in Smuggling
NEWARK, N.J. (AP) - Two Continental Airlines baggage handlers are accused of using their access badges to enter restricted areas at Newark Airport as part of a plot to smuggle cocaine. |
Omari Copeland, 24, and Devinci Williams, 23, were charged last week by Customs officials, but the arrests were not immediately made public. If convicted, the two face up to 10 years in federal prison.
Authorities said the men came to the airport on one of their days off in June, wearing their uniforms and using their badges to pass through restricted areas.
They walked across the tarmac to a jet that had originated in Ecuador with a stop in Panama and volunteered to help unload it. Copeland then removed a suitcase containing 20 kilograms of cocaine from the cargo hold, authorities said.
