Continental Airlines, which is widely seen as a bellwether for the rest of the airline industry, has issued surprisingly strong results for December, offering the first hint of positive news for the sector in more than a year.
In results issued after the market closed on Thursday, Continental said its December mainline jet passenger revenue per available seat mile (RASM) was up between 9 and 11 per cent during December 2001, but 5-7 per cent down during December 2000. That compared with weak November numbers when RASM had fallen 1.7 per cent during November 2001. The shares rose 70 cents, or 9.19 per cent, to close at $8.32 on Friday.
