Government announces Sept. 11 flight restrictions

The rules limit flying within a 34.5 mile radius of the event sites below 18,000 feet. Passengers on commercial airlines will be required to remain seated for 30 minutes after takeoff and 30 minutes before landing in the three areas.

Private flying will be banned or in some cases limited to aircraft operating under instrument flight rules. Sightseeing and training flights will also be banned.

In New York, the restrictions will be in effect from 7 a.m. EDT on Sept. 11 until 8 p.m. on September 13. Private planes will be banned shortly before, during and after public outdoor events on all three days.

Good plan. This way, any potential hijackers will have their plans foiled since they are required to remain seated. They should pass a permanent rule that prohibits all hijacking of planes, too.

The private plane ban is funny, too, since it's clearly a self-enforced kind of thing. Clearly, the US govt can't even keep planes away from the Whitehouse

Mayor Daley here in Chicago is all up in arms (and has been since Sept 11) about CGX. He's been trying to get the airport shut down for 3 or 4 years. Using the "threat" of planes attacking the city, he wants to close Meigs for good. [/url]
