Airlines Try for Fare Increase

NEW YORK (AP) -- Picking up where Continental Airlines left off, United Airlines has raised the price of previously discounted business and leisure fares by $20 roundtrip.

Last week, Continental initiated an across-the-board increase of $20 roundtrip, only to back down because some of its competitors refused to go along with the change.

United's fare increase, which appears to be more limited than Continental's, went into effect late Wednesday. So far, industry-watchers say, it has been matched by American Airlines and Northwest Airlines, one of the carriers that did not go along with last week's price adjustment.

Second Attempt at Raising Leisure Air Fares Falls Apart

NEW YORK -- Major airlines' second attempt in two weeks to boost fares collapsed Monday after AMR Corp. (NYSE: AMR - news) 's (AMR) American Airlines, Continental Airlines Inc. (CAL) and US Airways Group (NYSE: U - news) Inc. (U) rescinded a $20 increase on leisure fares they put in place late last week.

That didn't last long. Either way, I refunded an $80 in fare differences as a result.
