Last week, Continental Airlines announced it was raising fares by $10 a trip to pay for higher fuel prices. Other airlines following suit included American Airlines, United Airlines, Delta Airlines and US Airways.
A Northwest spokesman on Monday said the Eagan-based carrier had not followed the other airlines' example and had only matched the fare hike "selectively."
Consumer advocate and airline analyst Terry Trippler said Northwest had increased so few fares that the other carriers had been forced to drop their plans.
This was the third time in two months that airlines have tried and failed to raise airfares.
