CHICAGO (Reuters) - Flying jitters, long lines and tighter security resurfaced at airports after a weekend shoe-bomb scare aboard an American Airlines flight, but like Thanksgiving, post-Christmas holiday travel proceeded smoothly nationwide on Thursday except for some weather-related delays.

Thursday was expected to be the busiest day of the winter holiday period for U.S. airlines, capping off the second major test of the U.S transportation system since the Sept. 11 attacks in New York and Washington. The airlines had their first holiday-driven, large-volume test over Thanksgiving.
