Strikes set to halt Europe's planes

Air travellers across Europe face major disruption on Wednesday as air traffic controllers strike against an EU plan to put the continent's air space under international controls.

Almost all French short-haul flights are expected to be affected by the industrial action, which will also hit Italy, Portugal, Greece and Hungary to a lesser extent.

A general strike in Greece on Tuesday and another one planned in Spain for Thursday have further complicated the situation for travellers.

Spanish flights hit by further strike

Thousands of holidaymakers face flight delays and cancellations on Thursday as Spanish air traffic controllers and other key workers go on strike.

An estimated 80,000 Britons could be affected by the 24-hour walkout, which is part of a general strike in the country.

Eighty per cent of Iberia flights will be grounded and Palma Airport in Majorca is expected to be so badly hit it is being closed completely.
