U.K.'s Byers to Consider New Runways for Airports, FT Report

U.K.'s Byers to Consider New Runways for Airports, FT Reports
British Transport Secretary Stephen Byers will consider building three new runways in southern England, the Financial Times reported, citing unidentified government officials.

The proposals will likely be endorsed by businesses and tourism companies as the runways will reduce delays, the paper said. Air traffic is set to double in the next 20 years, the FT said.

``One extra runway would not be enough,'' an unidentified official told the paper. ``It's a question of jobs and the contribution of aviation to the economy.''

The proposal will not include the construction of a new airport, the paper said. The runways will be at Heathrow, Stanstead or at Gatwick, the Ft said.
