US expects to require Airbus A300 inspections

US expects to require Airbus A300 inspections
Responding to the crash of American Airlines Flight 587, the Federal Aviation Administration said on Thursday it expects to require inspections of the vertical tail stabilizer on all Airbus A300 aircraft in the United States, an agency official said.

The move came one day after American announced that it would inspect its fleet of 34 A300s after Monday's crash near John F. Kennedy International Airport killed up to 265 people. All aboard were killed, as were five people on the ground.

More than 70 American pilots have signed a petition urging the airline to ground Airbus A300 jets over safety concerns. Flight 587, the plane involved in the November crash in New York, was an Airbus A300.
