It certainly seems that while the US is lowering rates to attract customers, Qantas's rates seem to have gone through the roof. Coincidence that their biggest compeditor just went belly up?

I haven't noticed the prices go up too much. Fuel prices are rising and so is inflation, that might be why prices are going up. QANTAS is also becoming a more luxurious airline. Jetstar has taken all the cheap flights off QANTAS and QANTAS was never a budget airline so it should be expected that you pay a lot to fly QANTAS.
