How much will you need depends on how much you can afford!! With hotels with fan only rooms starting around 400 baht and rooms with air starting around 600 baht in Bangkok you have a lot of options. Of course you can pay a little more and get a little better place to stay. Food is pretty good and cheap too! American/European food available in many places too. First read up on Thailand and see if it will do for you. Then figure out how much can you aford per night for a hotel after you pay for your plane ticket. Different times of the year will give you different prices for plane tickets. Christmas and New Years will be the highest plane tickets and the highest prices for hotels too. In the summertime from June through to near the end of September plane tickets from the US will be high. This is when the kids get out of school and fly everywhere, the airlines take advantage of this and keep the prices high. In Thailand from around late May to Late September the hotels are at low season pricing. Every now and then you can find a good price for a plane ticket regardless of what season you are flying. Whe you figure out how much you can afford for hotels then you can get some suggestions where to stay. But, first read up and see if this will do for you. For local Thai information you can also access this local specific website.
