Finding hotels while in Europe

My trip is coming up soon, April-May, and my travel partner and I are in a bit of disagreement. He would like to get to Europe with only our first two nights booked, and try to find hotels, and once we get there. I feel as tough finding a hotel on the spot would cost much much more than booking it before leaving. We are looking to spend around 100-150 USD a night and I know that is hard enough to find online. How difficult is to to find hotels on the spot? Thank you.

1. Stay in a hostel for the ultimate backpacking experience. Hostels are low-budget accommodations that provide a bed and bathing facilities usually dorm-style. Most range in price between $10 and $30 a night and include a small breakfast. Many times the backpacker must have their own travel sheets and towel, or they may be rented for an additional fee. Most require a minimum age of 18, and some even have a maximum age limit of 26. Most don't accept reservations. They work on a first-come basis.

   Choose to stay in a bed and breakfast for a cheaper rate than a hotel. This is often a better option for couples. Although not as cheap as hostels, they will be more comfortable and offer more privacy.
4. Step 4
   Camp at a European campsite for the lowest price. There are hundreds of campsites to choose from in Europe, and many campsites offer tent rental Some campsites have cabins to rent, which may be a good option for families or groups.
5. Step 5
   Join a home exchange group for free places to stay. These communities open their homes to travelers, and as a member, the traveler must in turn open their home to other travelers. This is an exciting way to see new places through the eyes of a local and not a tourist. The traveler can meet new people and make new friends.
