It's not really necessary to sign up for a "guided tour group" before you go to Thailand. Find your best price for round-trip airfare to Bangkok. After you get settled in your hotel you will notice lots and lots of travel agencies all over Bangkok and major cities. Even some hotels have tour desks, compare their prices with private travel agencies.

Tourism if big business in Thailand. Just pop in to a couple travel agencies and check out their menu selection of available tours. Choose which ever travel agency you feel comfortable with and pay for the tour. They will pick you up at your hotel and bring you back.. On these tours you will be on a bus or in a van that is full of other similar tourists.

Doing it yourself is real easy and you can save lots of money!
