Standby Policy and Prices for United Airlines?

I need to go from SFO to SBA today, and just checked for round trip prices and found that they're about $600. Which is ridiculous.

Does UA allow standby if I don't have a ticket on the same day? Is it cheaper if I do it that way? If so, how much do you estimate it'd be?

Also how the hell do I talk to someone about this at UA? I called 1800UNITED1 and I couldn't figure out how to talk to a real person to ask for this information. united.com doesn't have it either.

Thanks!!!
