Israel Tourism Plunges to 10-Year Low

JERUSALEM, Jan. 22 — Tourism to Israel plunged in 2001 to its lowest level in a decade as violence between Palestinians and Israelis kept visitors away in droves, a government report showed on Tuesday. The Central Bureau of Statistics said that 1.2 million people visited Israel last year, down more than 50 percent from a record high of 2.7 million visitors in 2000.

THE BUREAU said the number of tourist arrivals, a major influence on the economy, was the lowest since the Gulf War year of 1991.

The Tourism Ministry said income from the sector sank to about $2 billion in 2001 from $4 billion in 2000.

The decline adds to the problems of a trade-dependent economy which has been jolted by a global economic slowdown, particularly in the high-technology sector, which has led to a sharp drop in exports.

Tourism grew steadily to about 2 million visitors a year by the mid-1990s and was flying high in 2000, helped by a visit from Pope John Paul.
